Navigating Eclipse Season: A Guide to Self-Care and Inner Transformation

Art by hheininge

Every 6months, as the celestial dance of the sun, moon, and earth aligns, we find ourselves entering eclipse season—a potent time of cosmic energy and profound transformation.

Eclipses are known for their ability to catalyze change and shake up our lives, both externally and internally. While these cosmic events offer opportunities for growth and evolution, they can also bring intense emotions, uncertainty, and upheaval. In the midst of this cosmic whirlwind, prioritizing self-care becomes essential for maintaining balance, grounding, and inner peace.

Spiritual Nutrition for Eclipses

What to do during an eclipse?

Rest, Reflect, Observe, Take space, Ground. Don’t: react, plan too much, make swift decisions, try to force things.

What you do before an eclipse is often WAY more important. Eclipses are never just one day.

The events are chapters in the bigger story of our life. When eclipses are aspecting our natal planets, they can initiate unexpected changes and curve balls. But how we deal with this is really part of a much bigger picture. Generally, the more we’ve been working on our triggers, shadows, patterns, and nervous system regulation, the better we’ll be able to navigate whatever events come up. Not to say that it’s easy, but easier than if we’re not doing our work.

Eclipses aren’t here just to be stressful; they are part of our evolutionary path that our soul has chosen. Like all transits, eclipses can be initiations into greater maturation and wisdom. OR if we’re not doing the work, it shows us exactly that and we feel more a victim of our own pain and suffering. The Buddha said: Life is suffering, but there is a way out of the suffering. The psychological view of astrology that each transit is an opportunity for growth or an opportunity for wallowing is another way of saying this.

The Eclipse Big Picture

Astrology is about patterns and cycles. We can never really look at each eclipse individually, but rather as a group. The nodes of the moon, that dictate where the eclipses happen, shift around the zodiac in about 19 years, spending roughly 18 months in each sign. The signs are grouped into pairs. So when the NN is in Aries, the SN is Libra (as is happening now). We generally have 2 eclipses every 6 months (although this can change and sometimes there’s more!). So in that 18 month period there’ll be several eclipses in that pair and this becomes a story.

The bigger picture is that every 19 years we have eclipses in the same sign. So during eclipses, we can always reflect: What was happening during the last eclipse in this sign? What was happening 19 years ago? Very often there are similar patterns, and it’s an opportunity to see what’s coming up for us to work on, and reflect on how we have grown and changed.

Spiritual Nutrition is about feeding our soul. Eclipses are potent times to keep us on our soul path. Our Human aspect may find this extremely challenging, and we should acknowledge that and have compassion for that aspect of us. Equally, another perspective is that the changes are nourishing for our soul, and trusting in the soul path we are in. For example, you lose a job or a relationship.

Generally, at some level, this might be because that job or relationship wasn’t aligned for our highest good. At the time it’s painful and hard to see, but often with hindsight, we can see that this ending paved the way for something more aligned for us. Very often as humans, we grip to what is chaining us in life. We grip the familiar even if it’s keeping us caged.

Spiritual Nutrition Tip: In times of change, something familiar can be soothing. I recommend a playlist of your favorite songs that help you to feel safe and grounded, tracks that you may have had on repeat as a child. Familiarity is very soothing for our nervous system.
