Sitting with each other - therapeutic approaches and meditation working together
Being a mediation guide and mentor has meant years of doing a lot of inner work and continuing this inner work. As part of my commitment to this I’m embarking on a new and exciting training with Dr Gabor Mate. I’ve been accepted into his Compassionate Inquiry® program which is a psychotherapeutic approach developed by Dr. Gabor Maté that reveals what lies beneath the appearance we present to the world.
Our spirutal journey’s are multifaceted and interconnected. When we start meditation we develop a ‘metacognition’ which means we become more aware of ourselves. We may become more aware of our patterns, our blocks, our self limiting beliefs.
It’s often at this stage that we do require more support. There may be trauma (macro or micro) to work through from childhood. Mr Mate describes trauma as not so much the event that happened outside of us, but the trauma within when we detach from our most essential nature.
This is why meditation and therapy go hand in hand together. Through compassionately inquiring with curiosity why we’ve developed certain behaviours and then using meditation to deeply remember and reconnect to our essence.
As an example, we can imagine a busy and confident mum and business woman, who overworks and tries to please everyone. In childhood her parents were fighting and she was trying to keep the peace and as a little girl and the only time she received positive strokes for helping out around the house. As such she believes that she has to work hard to be loved. She’s often unconcsiously seeking outside love and validation, and if she rests she feels uncomfortable that others won’t love her or think she’s lazy. Her soul is crying out for something else, something more, but her ego identity is trapped in these people pleasing habits which is making it hard for her to really share her truth and say what she really feels…
As children almost all of us at some point have created coping mechanisms that served us as children but not so much in adults.
This kind of work has been part of my training since my spiritual journey began with all my various teachers over the last ten years; and now I’m really excited and honoured that I get to add an extra layer of training to hold space for others.
I’m working with a maximum of 5 private clients and have 2 spaces free, if you’d like to have a free 15min chat with me about whether this is a good fit for you, you can book via my profile.
