How I Use Essential Oils In Meditation
Oils For Space Clearing
The first step to any meditation is clearing the space you’re going to meditate in. This helps you to create an ‘intention’ that you’re going to meditate. You can think of it like cleaning your house when a guest is coming.
This can be super quick!! If you meditate on your sofa, rearrange the cushions as a signal you're about to meditate.
I then spritz Lavender Oil and White Angelica. White Angelica is amazing for clearing negative energy.
I make a super simple recipe.
I use little brown glass spray bottles and an old fashioned label maker which I love - it’s black tape with white punched letters - so looks a little old school but cool in my opinion). I fill the bottle 2cm deep with Witch Hazel, add 7 drops of Lavender and 7 drops White Angelica oil and then fill with distilled water and shake (witch hazel helps the oils to mix). Then I normally leave in a crystal grid on top of some paper upon which I’ve written an intention to be infused into the spray and leave overnight. I love making sprays like this and often gift them to friends as they are made with love and intention.
Bergamot With A Calming Pranayama
My favourite breathing right now is alternate nostril breathing. But rather than breathing through both nostrils alternately, I block the right side and just breathe in and out through the left nostril and breath in Bergamot. Why? Well breathing through the left side only puts us more into the calm parasympathetic state (rest & digest), which we want before meditation and if we ever feel too much in overdrive. Breathing this way and inhaling bergamot, enhances Bergamot capacity for reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
Frankincense When Reaching Still Point
I diffuse Frankincense as a backdrop to everything in my meditation, and I love it. It’s my fav go to oil for meditation, and I find it sits well with all the other oils I’ve mentioned above. By the end of my meditation it’s just Frankincense really coming through, the other scents have faded away, and I love this. Frankincense promotes grounding, balance and openness. I love it so much I’ve created a roller ball called “I Am Sacred” as this oil is fabulous for aura cleansing also.
History of Essential Oils and Meditation
Meditation usually involves burning incense to energetically clear the space and raise vibration, to create the best possible environment that’s conducive to entering the meditation bandwidth.
Of course in certain modern situations it may not be practical to burn incense due to ventilation issues.
This is where diffusing essential oils comes in really handy.
Some of the most common incenses/oils used for meditation are:
Frankincense, Sage, Palo Santo, Lavender, Rose.
Most of the oils in the Set Oil of Scriptures are great to use in meditation. Some of them are very woody earthy so you don’t need to use very much of them.
